IDOT Accepting Applications for Safe Routes to School Grants

SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Department of Transportation is now accepting applications for the Safe Routes to School program, which provides up to $250,000 per project to improve safety for students walking, biking, or rolling to school. A total of $12 million in federal funding is available for projects such as new sidewalks, bike facilities, traffic-calming measures, and accessibility improvements. Eligible applicants include school districts, local governments, planning groups, and nonprofits, with preference given to schools serving low-income students and students with disabilities. Applications are due by October 13, and awards will be announced in the spring.
