BLOOMINGTON — The Illinois Farm Bureau is praising the U.S. House of Representatives for passing the Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2026 and is urging the Senate to act quickly. Illinois Farm Bureau President Philip Nelson said farmers have been waiting for an updated five year farm bill after several extensions since 2023 and called the measure important for stability during a difficult farm economy. The legislation includes updates to disaster programs, conservation efforts, and crop insurance, along with increased funding for trade promotion, rural broadband, and agricultural research. It also expands support for new and veteran farmers, improves access to loan programs, and creates a commission to modernize federal agriculture data collection. Officials said the bill also addresses foreign ownership reporting of farmland and adds support for specialty crop growers and local food programs.
