BYRON – Google and Constellation Energy have reached a 20 year agreement that will add 890 megawatts of new nuclear power capacity to the PJM grid, including upgrades at the Byron Generating Station in northern Illinois. Constellation plans to upgrade 11 nuclear units in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, with the Byron plant among those expected to receive upgrades that will increase its electricity output. The agreement represents more than $4.3 billion in new investment and is expected to support about 4,400 existing jobs and create roughly 7,200 construction jobs. Google will also purchase an additional 2,700 megawatts of electricity from Constellation under a separate 15 year agreement. The first upgraded facility is expected to begin providing additional power in 2028. The companies said the deal will help meet growing electricity demand from data centers and artificial intelligence while supporting reliability of the regional power grid.
