Gas Prices Rise As Spring Break Travel Increases Demand

WASHINGTON — Gas prices are rising as spring break travel increases demand across the country. The national average for a gallon of regular gasoline is $3.72, matching the statewide average in Illinois. Local prices remain slightly lower with averages of $3.61 per gallon in Ogle County, $3.60 in Lee County and $3.63 in DeKalb County. The American Automobile Association said the national average jumped nearly 35 cents over the past week as more drivers begin traveling during warmer weather. Oil prices have also increased and have topped $100 per barrel several times in recent days, which affects prices at the pump. Federal officials said the United States will release 172 million barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve over the next four months as part of a broader effort by the International Energy Agency to release 400 million barrels worldwide.
