SPRINGFIELD — Illinois families can access free meals and snacks this summer for children 18 and younger through federal programs run by the Illinois State Board of Education, with more than 1,000 sites in 72 counties participating and additional locations expected to open as the season continues. State Superintendent of Education Dr. Tony Sanders said, “No child should go hungry when school is out,” adding that the programs help children stay healthy and ready for school. Families can find nearby meal sites by searching the USDA Summer Meals for Kids Site Finder, texting “Summer” to 914 342 7744 or calling the National Hunger Hotline at 1-866-3-HUNGRY or 1-877-8-HAMBRE for Spanish. Sites in the region include DeKalb High School, Huntley Middle School in DeKalb, Mitchell Elementary in DeKalb, Welsh Park in DeKalb, NIU campus steam program in DeKalb, Northbrook Middle School in Mendota, Reagan Middle School in Dixon, Madison School in Dixon and Dixon High School.
