OREGON — The Ogle County Health Department has confirmed the year’s first mosquito pool testing positive for West Nile virus, detected in Forreston. Officials warn the virus should be considered present throughout the county and urge residents to take precautions through the fall. West Nile virus is spread by the bite of an infected house mosquito and can cause fever, headache, muscle aches, and in rare cases, severe illness or death. Health officials recommend reducing standing water, using insect repellent, and reporting stagnant water sites to help control mosquito populations.
