SPRINGFIELD — Illinois has reported its first human case of West Nile virus in 2025, involving a hospitalized resident from Southern Illinois. Spread by mosquito bites, the virus can cause serious illness in rare cases, especially in older adults or those with weakened immune systems. Officials urge the public to prevent bites by removing standing water, using insect repellent, and reporting mosquito breeding areas. So far, 19 counties have confirmed West Nile activity this year.
