Fire Officials Urge Residents to Check Smoke Alarms

SPRINGFIELD — Illinois fire safety officials are reminding residents to make sure their homes have working smoke alarms. During the 2025 Statewide Blitz, Illinois fire departments installed 1,320 smoke alarms in 465 homes and provided fire safety education to more than 1,000 residents. The National Fire Protection Association reports working smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by 60%. Officials recommend installing alarms in every bedroom, outside sleeping areas and on every level of a home. Smoke alarms should be tested monthly and replaced when they are 10 years old or older. The Be Alarmed! Smoke Alarm Installation Program provides free smoke alarms and fire safety education through participating Illinois fire departments.
