CHICAGO – A Chicago federal appeals court is upholding the conviction of former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan. A three-judge panel rejected arguments from Madigan’s defense team. The former House speaker is currently serving a seven-and-a-half-year federal prison sentence after being convicted last year. Federal prosecutors claimed he conspired with others to get ComEd to make monetary payments to his associates in exchange for favorable legislation. With this decision, Madigan could now petition the U.S. Supreme Court to review the case.
