WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois has reintroduced the Protecting Student Athletes from Concussions Act, legislation that would require states to adopt stronger procedures for preventing, identifying, and treating concussions in elementary and secondary school sports. The bill, also sponsored in the House by Rep. Mark DeSaulnier of California, includes a policy that bars students suspected of a concussion from returning to play the same day and requires medical clearance before resuming activity. Backed by major professional and collegiate sports organizations, the measure comes as the National Federation of State High School Associations reported more than 254,000 student concussions across nine high school sports during the 2023-24 school year.
