WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin met with Northern Illinois University President Lisa Freeman this week to discuss the impact of legislation supported by congressional Republicans and the Trump administration that reduces access to student loans and Pell grants while canceling millions in research funding. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act places new limits on graduate and Parent PLUS loans, sets a lifetime borrowing cap, and restricts Pell grant eligibility for students receiving other aid. The administration has also cut $3 million from NIU’s National Science Foundation grants after the university received more than $8 million in Fiscal Year 2024.
