Dixon Police Warn Of Financial Institution Phone Scam

DIXON – The Dixon Police Department is warning residents about a scam involving phone calls and texts that appear to come from financial institutions. Scammers can spoof caller ID so calls or messages display a bank’s official name and phone number, while using personal information found online to gain the victim’s trust. Scammers may claim there has been fraudulent activity or that funds are compromised before pressuring victims to transfer money, provide personal information, share passwords or grant remote access to a device. Police say residents should be cautious of unsolicited messages involving urgent fraud claims, requests to move money to another account or requests for personal information. Residents should never rely on caller ID to verify who is contacting them, should not provide personal information and should end suspicious calls before contacting their bank directly using a trusted phone number. Complaints can be filed with the Federal Trade Commission or the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.
