DeKalb Police Confirm ICE Activity Near Walmart

DEKALB — DeKalb Police Chief David Byrd confirmed Tuesday that immigration enforcement activity occurred near the Walmart on Sycamore Road after officers responded around 10:30 a.m. to a report of a suspicious vehicle. Byrd said Immigration and Customs Enforcement did not notify or coordinate with the DeKalb Police Department and is not required to share its operational plans.

“As a local police department, the Illinois Trust Act prohibits that. We cannot get involved in any immigration laws, so we don’t enforce those laws.

So I’m not giving any advice at all, other than there are federal agents in the commission of their duties.”

He added that local officers will continue to focus on city and state law enforcement duties.
