Community Shoe Box Closes After Years of Service in DeKalb

DEKALB — The Community Shoe Box, a local program that provided free shoes to families and individuals in need, is closing its doors in DeKalb. Organizer Khrysty McWhorter announced the decision on social media, citing continued disrespect of her family’s space and resources after years of service. McWhorter invited anyone interested in hosting the program at a new location to reach out, saying she will donate the current supplies, shelving and shoes. The program began as a way to help families with growing children but expanded to serve foster parents, community members needing shoes for events or interviews, unhoused individuals and those assisted by police and social workers. McWhorter said she kept the project going as long as possible but can no longer continue.
