CHICAGO — More than $696 million in federal funding has been awarded for three Amtrak projects in Chicago, including upgrades to maintenance facilities and repairs to aging bridges. The Federal Railroad Administration awarded $572 million for modernization of Amtrak’s Midwest maintenance facilities, $87 million for the Chicago Rail Bridge Renewal project and $37.25 million for rehabilitation of the South Branch Bridge. The projects are expected to improve safety, reliability and service for Amtrak routes serving Illinois and other Midwest states. The South Branch Bridge project is part of the Chicago Hub Improvement project, which includes efforts to improve Chicago Union Station and surrounding rail infrastructure.
