Byron Enacts Grocery Tax

BYRON – The Byron City Council on Wednesday night approved legislation to implement a local grocery tax after the state ends its 1% version later this year. The funds would go into the General Fund and apply to most grocery items except hot, prepared foods. This new policy will not raise grocery prices, it just replaces an existing tax consumers are paying now. City officials estimated that Byron stood to lose around $150,000 in revenue if they chose to not enact the tax. The motion passed 6 to 2.
