BYRON – Byron City Council is looking into expanding the U.S. flag display along Route 2 from Colfax Street to Union Street for holidays like Memorial Day, Flag Day, and the Fourth of July. Council members talked about the condition of the current flags, the work involved in putting them up and taking them down, and possible mounting issues in some areas. One option discussed was keeping the flags up from Memorial Day through the Fourth to reduce city labor. The council is considering asking a local group to take over fundraising and help manage the project. More discussion is expected at the next administration committee meeting.
Byron Mayor John Rickard said residents have stepped up and said they’d like to see more flags.
“They’d like to extend it all the way through basically our downtown section,” he said. “From Colfax to Union, which is our business district. We’d like to see that. So we’re going to discuss that in terms of what the costs are going to be, how you raise that money, how you sustain it in the long run, how many flags, all those kinds of little technical, logistical things.”
