Byron City Council Approves Full TIF Funding for Alfano’s Pizzeria

BYRON — The Byron City Council voted Wednesday night to approve a tax increment financing agreement for exterior improvements at Alfano’s Pizzeria. The $29,596 project includes window and door replacement and painting. Council members approved funding 100% of eligible expenses instead of the standard 75% grant amount of $22,197. Committee members previously discussed concerns about setting a precedent by going beyond the usual funding level, with one member warning against opening “Pandora’s box” by moving away from the 75% guideline. Other members said the owner was making major improvements to the building, including electrical work not covered by TIF funds, and said the upgrades would improve the downtown appearance and future property value. Funding for the project will come from the next fiscal year’s $50,000 reserve allocation. Committee members also agreed to revisit TIF guidelines at a future meeting and discuss requiring two quotes for future projects.
