CHICAGO — Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul said a $7.4 billion settlement with Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family has taken effect, resolving years of litigation over their role in the opioid crisis. Illinois and local governments are expected to receive about $148.8 million over 15 years, with most funds distributed in the first three years to support addiction treatment, prevention and recovery programs. The agreement bars the Sackler family from selling opioids in the United States and follows a multistate investigation launched in 2016 and lawsuits filed by Illinois in 2019. Nationwide opioid settlements have now topped $58 billion, with more than $1.6 billion allocated to Illinois. Raoul said the funds will be distributed across the state to address the impact of opioid addiction.
