Byron Weighs Local Grocery Tax Option

BYRON  – The Byron City Council is considering whether to implement a local grocery tax after the state ends its 1% version later this year. While the move could make Byron more attractive to shoppers, the city stands to lose about $150,000 in revenue if the tax is not replaced. The funds would go into the General Fund and apply to most grocery items except hot, prepared foods. Local governments have until September to act, and the council plans to revisit the issue next month.
