SPRINGFIELD — The USDA Crop Progress report shows Illinois farmers were ahead of the five year average for corn and soybean planting as of May 3. Corn planting reached 38 percent, ahead of the 36 percent average, while soybean planting reached 46 percent, ahead of the 32 percent average. Corn emergence was reported at 24 percent and soybean emergence at 26 percent. The report also showed Illinois had 2.7 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending May 3. Topsoil moisture was rated 70 percent adequate and 17 percent surplus.
