MENDOTA — Habitat for Humanity of LaSalle, Bureau, and Putnam Counties is seeking applicants for a new home build in Mendota as construction is expected to begin soon, Executive Director Jessica Brayfield said. The home will be built at 1205 Jefferson Street and is planned as a three bedroom, two bathroom house of about 1,600 square feet, with a groundbreaking expected within two weeks and a goal of completion by September.
Brayfield said the organization is looking for families dealing with high rent or overcrowded living conditions who are willing to partner with Habitat.
“What we do is that we have volunteer labor and wonderful donors that cut down on the cost of the home for this homeowner, so a home like this would be very expensive, but with those donations and in kind labor, we are able to give them an affordable mortgage,” Brayfield said.
She said homes are not given away, with mortgage payments typically ranging from $800 to $1,200 per month including taxes and insurance. Habitat is prioritizing applications submitted before June 1, though applications will continue to be accepted beyond that date. Community members can follow the project, volunteer, or donate through the organization’s website or by contacting the Habitat ReStore in Peru.
