SPRINGFIELD — Illinois State Police, the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois Tollway and the Illinois State Police Heritage Foundation have announced a plan to honor every state police officer killed in the line of duty with a memorial sign along Illinois roadways. Officials said some signs have been installed in the past but not for all fallen officers. The new effort will create standardized signs for a uniform look and will be completed over the next several months. A total of 73 Illinois State Police officers have died in the line of duty since the agency began service on April 1, 1922.
