BISHOP HILL — Bishop Hill Old Settlers’ Day will be held Sept. 12, marking the 180th anniversary of the village and the 130th anniversary of the Bishop Hill Old Settlers’ Association. The event will feature a five year parade, a chicken dinner at the Colony School, music by the Bishop Hill High Society Band at noon and a program in the park at 1 p.m. featuring descendants of the original settlers. Birthday cake, author presentations and other activities also are planned. Joella Krause, president of the Bishop Hill Old Settlers’ Association, said the event honors the community’s history and those who established the village.
“So this is our five-year parade year. We also will have our five-year chicken dinner meal at the Colony School,” Krause said.
Old Settlers’ Day began in 1896, 50 years after Bishop Hill was settled, to honor the Swedish immigrants who established the community.
