Illinois DCFS Urges Caregivers to Follow ABCs of Safe Sleep

CHICAGO — The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is reminding parents and caregivers during Infant Safe Sleep Awareness Month to follow the ABCs of safe sleep: infants should always sleep Alone, on their Backs, and in a safe Crib. Unsafe sleep practices are a leading cause of infant deaths, with 126 Illinois infants dying before their first birthday in 2024, often from accidental suffocation. DCFS recommends removing pillows, blankets, toys, and other items from cribs, avoiding adult beds, couches, chairs, swings, or car seats for sleep, and communicating sleep plans with all caregivers. More information is available on the DCFS website.
