SPRINGFIELD – As schools prepare to reopen, the Illinois State Police are reminding motorists to obey school zone speed limits and stop properly for school buses. Drivers must slow to 20 mph in posted school zones from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on school days when children are present, and using hand-held phones while driving in these zones is banned with increased fines. Motorists must stop at least 20 feet away from stopped school buses with flashing lights and extended stop arms, with rules varying based on road type and direction. Failing to stop for a school bus can result in a $300 fine and a three-month license suspension for first offenses. The ISP also advises adults to teach children safe walking habits near schools.
