Trump Administration Cuts Funding for Illinois Farmers, Food Banks

SPRINGFIELD – The Trump administration has halted funding for two key agricultural grant programs in Illinois, forcing them to shut down. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has ceased reimbursements for the Local Food Purchase Assistance Program (LFPA) and the Resilient Food Systems Infrastructure Program (RFSI) for costs incurred after January 19, 2025, with no explanation or timeline for resumption. LFPA, which helped distribute food from Illinois farmers to communities in need, had $17.8 million in unpaid federal funds, while RFSI, aimed at strengthening local food supply chains, was set to provide $6.4 million in grants.
