SPRINGFIELD – Illinois saw a significant reduction in overdose deaths in 2023, with an 8% drop, the first decline since 2018. Opioid-related fatalities also decreased, with fewer deaths linked to synthetic opioids like fentanyl. Despite the progress, racial disparities in overdose deaths remain a concern, with Black individuals still at higher risk. State officials attribute the decrease to expanded access to naloxone, harm reduction programs, and increased treatment options. Governor JB Pritzker also unveiled an upgraded Overdose Data Dashboard, offering more accessible data on various substances.
