Polo Will Demolish Old Congress School

POLO – The City of Polo will be speeding up the timeline to demolish the old Congress School building. The city spent $17,500 to purchase the property, which had fallen into disrepair in 2023. Last December, Polo spent around $67,000 to remove the asbestos from the grade school, which was built in 1899.

Polo Mayor Doug Knapp said that it was a safety issue because of trespassers.

“They’ve broken windows from the inside,” he said. “It’s just getting to be a liability on the city part. If anybody gets hurt then that’s on us. It’s just time to get done sooner than later.”

Fischer Excavating will begin tearing down the building, with hopes the structure will be razed by May 1st. The school was closed in the mid 1980’s.
