POLO – The City of Polo is considering an ordinance that will impose two new taxes starting on January 1, 2026. The 1% Municipal Grocery Retailers’ Occupation Tax will apply to all gross receipts from the sale of groceries, while a similar 1% Municipal Grocery Service Occupation Tax will affect businesses that transfer groceries as part of a service, such as grocery delivery. The move allows the city to maintain current revenue levels by replacing the expiring state tax with a local version on January 1st.
Polo Mayor Mark Scholl said he supports the proposal.
“It’s an opportunity for us not to raise the taxes on our citizens or the people that buy things in our community but, you know, allow us to be able to collect what the state will not be collecting,” he said.
The Polo City Council will vote on the measure in an upcoming meeting.
