NWS Can Rehire Workers Laid Off During DOGE Cuts

WASHINGTON DC –  The Trump administration plans to rehire hundreds of National Weather Service workers laid off during DOGE cuts.  That’s according to two lawmakers who say NOAA can now fill 450 positions at the NWS.  The move comes during a summer of extreme weather and follows criticism after last month’s Texas floods that killed more than 130 people.  Illinois Congressman Eric Sorensen and Nebraska Republican Mike Flood are co-sponsoring the Weather Workforce Improvement Act, which would protect NWS jobs.  The measure would reclassify the agency’s workers as critical to public safety.
