NIU Hosts Basketball Tournament for Youth in Illinois Juvenile Justice Centers

DEKALB  – Northern Illinois University held a basketball tournament for youth from five Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice centers, organized by Project FLEX, a program through NIU’s College of Education. The event brought teams from youth centers in Chicago, Grafton, Harrisburg, St. Charles, and Warrenville to compete on campus, with participants selected based on good behavior and interest. NIU students volunteered as referees, event staff, and supporters, while IDJJ staff coached and coordinated uniforms and practice. The St. Charles team, representing the PEACE Center, won the tournament and returned with the championship trophy. Project FLEX uses sports and mentorship to support youth development and prepare them for success after incarceration.
