Niemerg Proposes Bill to Block Driver Licenses for Noncitizens After Fatal Crash

SPRINGFIELD – State Representative Adam Niemerg, R-Dieterich, is introducing legislation aimed at preventing illegal immigrants from obtaining drivers’ licenses. House Bill 4184 would ban non-U.S. citizens from obtaining or renewing driver’s licenses or permits and require license and permit applicants to affirm their ability to read and write in English. Niemerg called the measure “Claytons’ Law” in remembrance of Coles County Board member Mike Clayton and his wife, who died in a crash involving a noncitizen immigrant charged with driving under the influence and reckless homicide.
