Local Students Head to 100th Annual Scripps National Spelling Bee

CHICAGO – Three middle school students from northern Illinois are set to compete in the 2025 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., marking the 100th year of the competition. Brighid Reid from Somonauk Middle School, Mason Coulthard from Lena-Winslow Junior High School, and Parker Zimmerly from Amboy Junior High School are among the 247 spellers vying for the title. The competition will begin with preliminaries on May 27, followed by quarterfinals on May 28. The semifinals will air live at 7 p.m. CT on May 28, with the finals scheduled for 7 p.m. CT on May 29. The event will be broadcast on ION television.
