Law Enforcement Partners to Combat Distracted Driving

SPRINGFIELD  – In observance of Distracted Driving Awareness Month, law enforcement agencies across the state are joining forces with the Illinois Department of Transportation and Illinois State Police to increase enforcement efforts aimed at reducing distracted driving. The campaign encourages drivers to stay focused by putting their phones away and avoiding distractions while driving. Last year, distracted driving contributed to dozens of fatalities in Illinois. Officers will be actively patrolling the roads, stopping and ticketing anyone violating distracted driving laws. In Illinois, using a phone while driving without a hands-free device is not only dangerous, but also illegal. The initiative is funded through federal traffic safety funds administered by IDOT.
