ROCHELLE — June is PTSD Awareness Month, a time to highlight the impact of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, which can affect anyone who experiences trauma such as violence, accidents, or natural disasters. About 6% of the U.S. population, or 12 million people, live with PTSD in any given year, with higher rates among veterans; up to 20% of those who served in Iraq or Afghanistan and around 30% of Vietnam veterans. Though PTSD is not always visible, it is a serious condition that often requires long-term support. Sinnissippi Centers provides mental health services and resources for those affected, including individuals with PTSD.
Andy Jackson, Marketing Coordinator with Sinnissippi Centers said PTSD can have lifelong impacts.
“It can be a temporary condition in response to a traumatic event that then might resolve itself and in that case it wouldn’t necessarily be diagnosed as PTSD but yes, PTSD is a serious condition, is a chronic condition that in general would probably require some treatment and support for the rest of one’s life,” he said.
