SPRINGFIELD – As construction season begins across Illinois, state agencies and transportation workers are reminding the public to prioritize safety during National Work Zone Awareness Week, observed this past week. The Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police, and local partners are highlighting the risks workers face on roads and urging drivers to stay alert in work zones. With nearly 6,300 crashes and more than 1,600 injuries in Illinois work zones each year, officials are increasing safety efforts with expanded speed enforcement and public outreach. Drivers are asked to follow posted signs, reduce speed, eliminate distractions, and remain cautious near workers and equipment.
