SPRINGFIELD. – Illinois officials are marking June 15th as Elder Abuse Awareness Day and encouraging the public to report suspected abuse of older adults as cases have risen since 2022. The Illinois Department on Aging says abuse can include physical harm, neglect, and financial exploitation, which is the most commonly reported type in the state. Adult Protective Services received more than 19,000 reports last year involving older adults. Officials say warning signs may include unexplained injuries, sudden financial changes, and unsafe living conditions. Suspected abuse can be reported to the Adult Protective Services hotline at 866-800-1409, or 911 in emergencies.
