SAVANNA – Illinois House Minority Leader Tony McCombie has filed legislation to designate April 27 as Ulysses S. Grant Day in Illinois. Grant, the 18th president of the United States, settled in Galena and led the Union to victory in the Civil War beginning in 1861. McCombie said the proposed commemorative day would recognize Grant’s ties to Illinois and his contributions to the state and nation. With the legislative year winding down, McCombie plans to refile the bill in the next General Assembly, which begins in 2027.
