Illinois House Passes Resolution Supporting Stronger Ties With Taiwan

SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois House of Representatives on Tuesday adopted House Resolution 108, reinforcing the state’s support for Taiwan and strengthening their sister-state relationship. Sponsored by Sycamore Representative Jeff Keicher, the resolution supports the Taiwan Relations Act and encourages Illinois businesses to refer to Taiwan by its official name. It backs Taiwan’s efforts to secure economic agreements with the U.S., including a Bilateral Trade Agreement, an Avoidance of Double Taxation Agreement, and participation in the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework. The resolution hopes to promote deeper trade partnerships between Illinois and Taiwan through steps like signing economic memorandums and sending state officials to Taiwan. It also supports Taiwan’s involvement in international organizations and rejects the misuse of United Nations Resolution 2758 to exclude Taiwan from global engagement.
