Illinois House Passes Measure to Eliminate Age-Based Driving Test Requirements

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois House has passed a measure that would remove the requirement for drivers aged 79 and 80 to take a road test when renewing their licenses. Under the new law, these drivers would only need to visit the DMV for an eye test. However, drivers would be required to pass a road test once they turn 87. Illinois is currently the only state with road exams based on age. The measure is supported by a report from the Secretary of State’s office, which states that senior drivers are among the safest on the road and that there is no immediate threat to public safety.

State Representative Jeff Keicher (R-Sycamore) said “Before it was brought to me by one of my constituents, we have had a persistent issue with discriminating against older folks in this state. This bill goes part of the way towards resolving that, but we have further to go.”

The bill, which impacts an estimated 348,709 motorists annually, also allows family members to report drivers with medical or cognitive issues to the Secretary of State. The legislation now moves to the Senate after passing in the House.
