SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois House voted 107-0 on Monday to approve House Bill 2339, which modifies the management of chronic wasting disease in deer. The bill mandates that the Department of Natural Resources halt its sharpshooting program in counties where no cases of the disease have been found in the past three years. House Minority Leader Tony McCombie said it is just common sense.
“The bill states that if there’s no cases of new CWD found in the deer herd for three years in those particular counties, the sharp shooting by the DNR would end. The testing would not,” she said. “It’s an evidence-based approach that is agreed upon by everyone.”
If the disease reappears, the program can be resumed. The measure now moves to the Illinois Senate for consideration.
