SPRINGFIELD – April is Hazardous Materials Safety Month in Illinois, and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency and Office of Homeland Security is reminding residents to stay informed about chemical safety. With more than 9,000 active chemical facilities across the state and over 100 new Tier 2 sites added each year, the agency tracks stored chemicals and responds to reports of spills or releases. IEMA works with local emergency planners, first responders, and the Illinois Fire Service Institute to provide training and public education. Residents are encouraged to follow safety tips for handling household chemicals and can track incidents through the state’s online database.
