SPRINGFIELD – Illinois farmers made progress on their spring crops, with 74% of corn planted, slightly behind the 5-year average of 77%. Corn emergence reached 54%, ahead of the 48% average. Soybeans were 67% planted, surpassing the 64% average, and 45% of the crop had emerged, well above the 33% average. Winter wheat was rated in fair to good condition. Topsoil moisture remained a concern, with 26% rated short and 5% very short, though 51% was considered adequate.
