PEORIA — Maj. Gen. Dan McDonough retired June 6 after nearly 40 years of service in the Illinois Air National Guard. McDonough, who led the Illinois Air National Guard from 2022 to 2025, oversaw more than 1,100 deployments, supported major international operations and guided the conversion of the 182nd Airlift Wing to C 130J aircraft. He received the Defense Distinguished Service Medal during a retirement ceremony at the 182nd Airlift Wing in Peoria. McDonough began his career as an aircraft maintainer before becoming a pilot, logging more than 700 combat flight hours and serving in operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
