SPRINGFIELD — As spring arrives, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is urging people to leave young wildlife alone when encountered in the wild. While some may feel compelled to rescue animals such as baby birds, fawns, and rabbits that seem abandoned, most of these animals are being cared for by their parents, and human interference can do more harm than good. The IDNR highlights that handling wild animals is illegal in many cases and can expose humans to health risks, including zoonotic diseases. Additionally, many wild animals, including migratory birds, are protected by state and federal laws. The public is advised to observe wildlife from a distance and contact licensed wildlife rehabilitators if necessary.
