Henry County Sheriff’s Office Ending Flock Safety Camera Program

CAMBRIDGE — The Henry County Sheriff’s Office will end its partnership with Flock Safety on Aug. 31 after operating eight Flock Safety cameras throughout Henry County since 2024. Sheriff Josh Verscheure said the cameras were funded entirely through drug seizure proceeds and not Henry County taxpayer dollars. The sheriff’s office said there has been no indication of misuse, abuse or improper use of the technology by personnel during the approximately two years the system has been in operation. The cameras have assisted deputies in numerous cases and provided a valuable investigative tool, but the sheriff’s office said it also recognizes concerns about automatic license plate reader technology, data privacy and balancing public safety with individual privacy. “This was not an easy decision,” the sheriff’s office said, noting that the technology provided legitimate investigative value and helped identify vehicles connected to criminal activity. The office said public trust and confidence in law enforcement are critical and that listening to community concerns is an important part of law enforcement. The Henry County Sheriff’s Office said it remains committed to using law enforcement technology responsibly and transparently while respecting the people it serves.
