Former Deputy Charged in Connection with Carroll County Teen’s Death

MOUNT CARROLL  — An investigation by the Illinois State Police has led to charges against a former Carroll County Sheriff’s Office Deputy.  Authorities announced Monday that 44-year-old Matthew Herpstreith from Savanna was charged with reckless homicide, reckless conduct, obstructing justice, attempt to obstruct justice, and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.  On July 28th last year, authorities discovered 18-year-old Jackson Kradle’s body lying on Illinois Route 78 just north of Mount Carroll around 3:30 AM. He was later pronounced dead at the scene. The charges follow findings that Kradle’s DNA was allegedly found under the vehicle driven by the off-duty deputy. Herpstreith, and the off duty Carroll County dispatcher who was reportedly in the vehicle with him at the time of the incident, have resigned their positions. He is next due in court on April 17th.
