CHATHAM – Authorities have identified 44-year-old Marianne Akers as the driver in Monday’s crash that killed four young people and injured others at an afterschool program in Chatham, just south of Springfield. The victims were two 7-year-olds, an 8-year-old, and an 18-year-old. Illinois State Police say Akers is not in custody, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation, including pending toxicology results. Officials say the incident does not appear to have been targeted. In response, Governor JB Pritzker ordered flags at state buildings to be flown at half-staff from April 30 to May 3. Blood donation centers across the region have also seen a surge in appointments following the tragedy.
