First West Nile Virus-Related Death Reported in Illinois Suburbs

BRIDGEVIEW — The Cook County Department of Public Health confirmed the first human West Nile virus-related death in suburban Cook County and Illinois this year. The resident, in their 60s, died after laboratory testing showed the virus was a contributing factor. Since May 11, suburban Cook County has recorded 33 West Nile virus cases, including 22 neuroinvasive cases, nearly double last year’s total. Health officials urged residents to protect themselves by reducing mosquito breeding sites, using insect repellent, wearing protective clothing and reporting standing water, noting seniors are at higher risk for severe illness.
